What if every student left school believing, “I can make a meaningful difference in the world—and I know how to begin?”
Every educator hopes students leave their classroom with strong academic knowledge. But how might they also leave with something even more enduring: the confidence to tackle complex problems, the curiosity to keep learning, the ability to work with others, and the belief that their ideas can make a positive difference?
Imagine a classroom where young people feel seen – not simply as learners working toward academic standards, but as individuals whose experiences, perspectives, and identities matter. They have meaningful choices in how they learn. They ask thoughtful questions, wrestle with authentic challenges, and work alongside classmates to improve ideas through feedback and reflection. They experience the satisfaction of creating something that serves others, whether in their school, neighborhood, or broader community. Along the way, they discover that mistakes aren’t something to avoid—they’re an essential part of learning, growth, and innovation.
Those experiences don’t happen by accident. They are intentionally designed.
The Power of Three
At Henry Ford Learning Institute (HFLI), we call this integrated approach Deeper Learning by Doing®. Rather than relying on a single instructional strategy or new initiative, Deeper Learning by Doing® intentionally brings together three mutually reinforcing elements: Design Thinking, Culturally Responsive and Restorative Practices, and High-Leverage Instructional Practices. Together, they foster learning experiences that are academically rigorous, deeply human, and connected to the world beyond the classroom.

Design Thinking helps students build the confidence to tackle challenges without predetermined answers. Beginning with empathy, students learn to understand the people behind a problem before jumping to solutions. They generate ideas, test them, gather feedback, and improve their work through multiple iterations. In the process, they develop resilience, creativity, and the confidence that they can learn their way through uncertainty.
Those learning experiences become even more powerful when grounded in culturally responsive and restorative practices. Students who feel respected, affirmed, and connected are more willing to take intellectual risks, share their perspectives, and collaborate across differences. Educators intentionally create classrooms where every learner experiences belonging while being challenged to grow. The result is more than positive relationships—it is a learning community built on trust, shared responsibility, and high expectations.
High-leverage instructional practices make those aspirations visible in everyday teaching. Thoughtful questioning, purposeful discussion, timely feedback, modeling, and formative assessment help every student engage deeply with challenging content while developing increasing ownership of their learning. These practices provide the structure that allows curiosity, collaboration, and agency to flourish.
The Impact for Students
Across education, organizations such as Harvard’s Deeper Learning Institute, Stanford’s d.School and High Tech High, as well as the emerging network of deeper learning educators, have helped demonstrate that meaningful learning happens when students engage in authentic work, connect learning across disciplines, and engage with and contribute beyond the classroom. Deeper Learning by Doing® builds on this growing body of practice by intentionally weaving together human-centered design, equitable learning environments, and effective instruction into one coherent approach.

When these elements come together, students begin to see themselves differently. They become more confident tackling unfamiliar challenges, more skilled at working with others, more curious about the world around them, and more committed to creating solutions that matter. They don’t just learn content—they develop the habits, mindsets, and sense of purpose that prepare them to continue learning long after they leave school.
The future of education won’t be shaped by one new program or one new initiative. It will be shaped by educators who intentionally design learning experiences that help every young person feel seen, think deeply, contribute meaningfully, and believe they have the capacity to improve the world around them.
That’s the invitation of Deeper Learning by Doing® – not simply to redesign lessons, but to enable the conditions where every learner can discover their strengths, grow with confidence, and make a meaningful difference.
