Funded by The Skillman Foundation and with collaboration from the Black Male Educators Alliance, Allies for Radical Collaboration (ARC) is a year-long fellowship for white-identifying educators who lead, love, and nurture Detroit students.
It has been six months since I joined our HFLI team. Six months of navigating a new-ish world after spending ten years as an educator in Detroit. Six months of building new relationships, learning the “HFLI Way,” observing, planning, and facilitating a multitude of workshops and engagements in my role as National Program Director.
Inspired by participants, HFLI’s Executive Director – Deborah Parizek – reflects on her recent experience as a Deep Dive facilitator at the 10th Annual Deeper Learning Conference. Shortly after this event, the National Art Education Association (NAEA) Design Interest Group presented Debi with the 2023 NAEA Outstanding Design Educator Award.
On the heels of Black History Month, I began looking more deeply at world leaders who have had a great impact on the black culture in America. I wanted to find a quote by one of these historical figures who has made an impact not only during their lifetime, but after as well - a quote I could hold onto for inspiration.
As I am reading the book “Culturally Responsive Teaching & the Brain” by Zaretta L. Hammond, I have learned that there are different types of learners - dependent and independent. I quickly realized that I fell into each category throughout the years.
A couple weeks ago, I was tasked with finding an engaging icebreaker/game that would encourage engagement throughout the room or meeting. I was told to not think too much into it, but I was determined to find a game that would do so.
As you can imagine, of course, there are a lot of different steps that take place before the delivery of a presentation or workshop. This includes meeting to discuss the flow of workshops to actually creating worksheets or presentations that will be used in the workshop.
For my first shadowing event with Henry Ford Learning Institute, I had the pleasure of attending workshops for Latina Leaders x Design, led by our implementing partners at Michigan Hispanic Collaborative.
