HFLI provides custom-designed experiences and scalable initiatives rooted in culturally-responsive practices. Our expertise as an innovation learning leader and our empathy as a strategic ally is reflected in every touchpoint, every engagement along a continuum of immersive, hands-on learning.
We work with our partners – schools, districts, colleges, and nonprofit organizations – to understand their experience with these issues and collaborate to tailor their engagement to meet their distinctive needs. HFLI provides immersive design thinking workshops that introduce participants to design thinking methods, mindsets, tools and strategies. Using a human-centered approach rooted in culturally restorative practices, HFLI helps educators learn to design and lead student-centered learning experiences that increase engagement, agency, and durable skills such as critical thinking and creative problem-solving. Nonprofit leaders build capacity to create learning experiences for young people and colleagues, and address persistent community challenges.
HFLI’s Adaptive Leadership methodology incorporates design thinking, strategic systems thinking, and change leadership into immersive workshops and extended learning series, supporting participants as they develop a future-orientation rooted in optimism, gain awareness of ways to address complex organizational challenges, access new tools and methods, and develop a plan to act on a pressing problem.
HFLI’s Social Innovation Studio® hands-on programs help teams of college-aged learners and professionals build design thinking skills and knowledge and future-ready competencies as they develop and advance social impact projects that address pressing needs in their communities.
When a partner identifies they wish to address a unique need or provide professional learning to their identified community, our HFLI team is able to meet them where they are and cultivate tailored, creative, and transformational learning experiences that help drive the impact your school, district, college, or nonprofit organization aims to achieve.
HFLI has collaborated with philanthropy, schools, business, and community organizations to develop and implement groundbreaking programs for learning, teaching, and leading, including:
Ford Law Career Academy is a career pathway active within two high schools serving Detroit students. Designed collaboratively by educators and lawyers, Ford Law can be implemented as a 3-year or 4-year program that excites and empowers students who want to prepare now for their future as lawyers or explore legal career opportunities through a focused educational experience.
Latina Leaders x Design® is a multi-week, cohort-based summer program in Detroit, San Antonio, and Denver that supports and connects young Latina women (ages 15-21) with transformational opportunities to forge trajectories for personal, professional, and economic growth. Participants engage in leadership development, design thinking, applied entrepreneurial skills, and project-based learning with teams focused on solving a real community challenge identified by the cohort. Culminating presentations emphasize durable skills critical to school and work readiness.
The Restorative Educator Fellowship (formerly known as Allies for Radical Collaboration) is a multi-year, cohort-based learning journey. Fellows explore how their personal identities shape their teaching practice; develop culturally responsive and restorative skills and strategies to build strong connections with students, families, and their broader school communities; and increase their bank of instructional and leadership tools, strategies and methods to foster powerful student learning outcomes.
