HFLI Winter 2016 Reflection

As a learning organization, Henry Ford Learning Institute (HFLI) is taking stock of some significant things that are moving us forward.

        We’re creating momentum in…

Supporting Great Teaching and Learning

Innovative teaching and learning requires support from the entire learning community. Thank you for all you are doing to ensure that students at our Henry Ford Academies will be successful in college, career and life. We celebrate these first semester accomplishments with our partners, colleagues, and friends:

  • P21, the leading national organization advocating for 21
st century learning for every student, designated Henry Ford Academy: School for Creative Studies in Detroit as an exemplar school district.
  • Henry Ford Academy: Alameda School for Art + Design was 6th of 50 San Antonio high schools ranked for teacher quality by Niche, an education analyst firm.
  • We’ve observed and supported teachers at Henry Ford Academy in Dearborn who have moved from running stand alone Design Thinking Challenges to collaborating across subjects, creating experiences that are highly integrated into everyday learning.Screen Shot 2016-02-23 at 1.55.09 PM

Providing Meaningful Learning Opportunities for Educators

HFLI’s focus includes helping K-12 educators gain the knowledge, skills and mindsets for bringing creative problem solving approaches into their schools.

The Henry Ford is a force for sparking curiosity and inspiring learners. We are enjoying a stronger collaboration, as HFLI supports the design of The Henry Ford’s innovation-focused curriculum and New Economy Initiative-supported teacher workshops.

In December, we co-hosted Engag(ED) Exchange in partnership with Teacher2Teacher, an initiative of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which brought together teachers from across Metro Detroit to forge meaningful connections, exchange ideas, and delve into how they can use Design Thinking principles in their learning environmen

In July and August we will conduct three high-energy Design Thinking workshops in Detroit. Ninety-seven percent of the last summer’s attendees reported that they see the value of using design thinking in their work. Please encourage the educators in your personal network to join us!

Developing Dynamic Leaders

One of the newest roles for HFLI has been our emerging work with community members and young professionals, helping them to be more creative and innovative in how they think, learn and collaborate.

HFLI is a design and implementation partner for Ford’s new Thirty Under 30 initiative, which will build leadership and civic engagement skills, and help design how Ford, as a company, can become more engaged with community needs.Screen Shot 2016-02-23 at 2.01.45 PM

At Ford Motor Company Fund’s Men of Courage event in Baltimore, HFLI helped participants use a collaborative process to create “action pacts” with the goal of strengthening communities and creating positive social change.

Creating a Foundation for Continued Growth

We are pleased to welcome two new members to our Board of Trustees: Brent Ott and Shawn H. Wilson. Brent is The Henry Ford’s Vice President of Business Services and Chief Financial Officer, and Shawn H. Wilson is manager, Multicultural Community Engagement, Ford Motor Company Fund. These non-profit leaders embody a spirit of innovation and service to community, which they bring to the table along with their considerable expertise and energy.

We are grateful to all of you for being by our side as we advance our commitment to redesign how people learn.

There is a better way. Let’s find it. Together.
