Job Description

The Speech and Language Teacher provides direct Speech and Language services to Special Education students, evaluates students suspected of having Speech and Language disabilities, and provides consultation to general education staff and parents to support optimal development of speech and language skills for students on caseload.

 

Duties:

  • Complete necessary and appropriate evaluations to determine eligibility for Special Education services
  • Complete necessary and appropriate evaluations to support direct instruction for students assigned to Speech and Language caseload
  • Complete necessary and appropriate case notes to detail student progress and inform decisions regarding retention or dismissal of students from caseload
  • Provide direct services to students on caseload in accordance with provisions of IEPs
  • Provide consultation to other school personnel and parents in accordance with provisions of IEPs
  • Participate in Response to Intervention process as outlined in accordance with district procedures
  • Conduct MET and IEP meetings for students on caseload
  • Complete all required special education paperwork in compliance with required state and federal regulations
  • Maintain accurate student information, progress information, and caseload information
  • Assist General Education and Special Education teachers in providing speech and language supports for students
Experience Required

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree with full State of Michigan licensure as a teacher of the Speech and Language Impaired
  • Knowledge of Special Education laws, rules and regulations
  • Knowledge of speech/language pathology necessary to assess and identify communication disorders and to develop appropriate programs and services for speech and language impaired students
  • Experience working with children who have speech and language impairments and their families
  • Experience working with multiple eligibility students, including Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Have willingness to assume any responsibilities appropriate for the position
    Behave and speak in professional manner

Minimum Requirements:

  • An evident commitment to holding all students to high expectations for academic and personal success
  • Significant experience working with urban children and their families
  • Comfort operating in a flexible, self-directed and fast-paced work environment
  • Regular, predictable attendance
